Language & Transliteration Guidelines

SJKS welcomes scholarship across different linguistic and knowledge traditions. Authors should use recognised scholarly conventions consistently.

Sanskrit

  • Sanskrit should follow IAST — International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration.
  • Sanskrit technical terms should generally be italicised at first use.
  • Important terms should be retained in the original language and defined when first introduced.
  • For passages central to the argument, authors should provide: Original Text → Transliteration → Translation
  • The translator should be identified.
  • Where the translation is the author’s own, this should be clearly indicated.
  • Key Sanskrit passages should include the original script where appropriate.

Other Indic Languages

Other Indic languages should follow ISO 15919 or the recognised scholarly convention of the field, clearly stated by the author.

Other Languages

For Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Greek and other languages, authors should use the recognised scholarly romanisation convention appropriate to the language.

Terminology, transliteration and spelling should be used consistently throughout the manuscript.
